Windswept tree in southern New Zealand
The coastal zone of Southland New Zealand is subjected to fairly constant cold salt-laden winds from the south and west.
Unthinking early Europeanisation of the landscape soon revealed there was little shelter for stock. Consequently non native shelter belts were planted. Many with macrocarpa. Which tends to flag, but at the same time grows with character.
